Where did you learn best practice? Who did you learn from?
How have you evolved that foundation to make it truly yours?
As a candidate, do you talk about this when you’re interviewing?
I recently interviewed a head of product who talked about this. It set him apart. I had never heard of the startup be built before, but he said that the company hired people from companies X, Y, and Z, all companies known for great product management processes. His specific leader and mentor was from company Y. Then this person went on to two other companies to head product, evolving what he learned.
I continued my interview to dive deeper into his experiences, but his framing of things this way was powerful.
I can’t help but internalize what people share, and think about my own background.
When I went to CTPartners, I was trained by partners from Heidrick & Struggles and Spencer Stuart. I learned what great search process looks like. Since then, I’ve spent the last decade putting my own spin on it.
See how just a couple sentences helps you get to know me better?
Something to think about when you’re describing your background. Even if it’s not specific company names, you could describe the company’s culture, mission, high bar for talent, team makeup, or what they value, before diving into your “tell me about a time when…” examples.
