Recruiting for startups versus large companies

I spent years recruiting executives for companies with 20k, 50k, sometimes 300k+ employees. I knew company target lists, competitors, trends, and org structures like the back of my hand.

Going off on my own I’ve followed people and relationships from company to company, so since launching Distinguished Search I’ve been working with startups too.

I used to think that recruiting for startups would be so different!

It turns out, it suits me well, especially now that I’m doing all the recruiting personally.

 - They work as fast as I do! Every day matters.

 - We’re true partners. We create roles, processes, and candidate experiences together.

 - I feel the accountability and interview candidates as if I work at the company. I’ve always done this, but I feel the weight of my opinion even more.

 - It's the same process, though more hands on in terms of working with all stakeholders and interviewers, not just internal recruiting/HR and the hiring manager.

I love when startups bring on a Talent Acquisition person for me to partner with, but I’m ok being their only recruiter for a while too.

The most fun? New rabbit holes to go down in research and networking. New players to discover. New things to learn. New people to meet.

It’s been a blast working with all types of companies and bringing best practices from one to another. I’ve been doing this for 22 years and I’m still learning every day.
